In the last couple of months, while reading the club newsletter, I took note of the need for fresh ideas and I wanted to think about a fresh destination to spark some interest. A chance conversation at a Coffee and Chrome gathering helped me to uncover a gem, and on further investigation a plan was formed.
It was now time to get the CCSA folk out before the Christmas festivities began…
On a fine and still morning, the destination to the Prosser family's Aussie Apricots and Cruise Revolution, began down on the flats, where my wingman Peter McBride marshalled and orchestrated the majority of the members through the Adelaide Hills to a meeting point where we gathered and greeted before the onward journey.
In total there was a train of 22 vettes and approximately 50 members rumbling down the South Eastern Freeway to the Monarto exit, and our final destination in Mypolonga.
It was here that Paul and Kathy were awaiting, amongst their apricot plantation for our arrival and the day began with an entertaining presentation detailing the history and development of their family business. They opened our eyes to their entrepreneurial spirit, passion for growing quality fruit and ultimate ability to diversify and grow their business through both good and challenging times. We were treated to a selection of tastings and everyone was sold with I'm sure most of their stock being sold from their sales room.
There was a strong emphasis on the consequences of overindulging on the peach and apricot truffles….. I hope everybody took note!!
They also introduced us to the planning of their future complex - an old farmhouse being restored and converted into a conference centre for accommodating larger groups and including a new shop front. All being undertaken by Paul in his 'spare' time! Where does this guy find more time!!
So, this was much much more than just an apricot farm!
Paul was also a previous CCSA member who had run out of time with his business commitments but had continued his motor passion, creating his own personal collection of American muscle cars, including his Corvettes and other Route 66 memorabilia.
In a separate building, Paul had managed to secure a collection of vehicles from the Malcolm Wicks Family Estate. This collection of early 1920-1950 vehicles was impeccable in its presentation and included the unique Adelaide built 1926 BESST. Who knew we had a third car manufacturer in Adelaide?! These cars had been produced in Mays Motorworks and built by TJ Richards Limited in Victoria Square, Adelaide.
Lunch was provided as part of the day, where the Prosser family cooked us a lovely BBQ lunch on the property.
I am sure that everyone who came up for this cruise enjoyed the day, and motoring memorabilia.
Finally, special thanks to Sean, Peter and Linda for their assistance in helping me organise this original CCSA run.
My next run is already in planning for 2022, so keep an open mind, keep reading your newsletters and watch this space!
Regards, Serge
