Club Run to The Bend Motorsport Park Saturday 13th October 2018
Or
Corvette members finally go round the bend
Club members met at the parking bay on the South East Freeway, just before the Mt Osmond Exit, for a 9:30 departure. The meeting point filled steadily, and required double parking to accommodate the 25 cars that arrived. 24 set off for The Bend, [unfortunately 1 car had suffered gremlins, and a front brake calliper had failed - summon the RAA - brakes are necessary on a race track?].
As it was a Saturday Run, the freeway was fairly busy, so the line of cars stretched for over a kilometre. As we travelled we collected a few more cars building the numbers to 27. The morning was cool but clear, a magnificent day for a run.
Arriving at the OTR on the entry road to The Bend Motorsport Park, we pulled over on the roadside to wait for the rest of the attending members to arrive (our 3 South East members and Da Prez and his better half). Once all were accounted for [31 cars - 25 Corvettes, 3 Commodores, 1 Dodge Phoenix and 1 Chevy Belair], we headed for the parking area.
After looking around the reception area, we signed in and were ushered to the driver briefing - 1 lap of the 4.95 GT circuit [used by V8 Supercars] and 1 lap of the 7.7 international circuit [the second longest permanent track to Nurburgring], we would be travelling at 80kph, no overtaking, need to keep within safe distance from car in front [but keep up] and don't get lost. As we headed onto the track, another 78 Corvette quickly joined the line up, making 32 cars. Took a long video with dash cam [lots of shots of the wings on a '59 Chevy Bel Air] - unfortunately the Corvettes behind the Pace Car cruised away out of sight, and were not seen again till we were leaving the track.
We returned to the Welcome Centre and proceeded upstairs to Rydges Restaurant where we had an "alternate drop" meal of either steak or chicken. Meals were excellent, as was the service. After lunch we returned to the cars and moved to an area for a photo shoot, where photos could be taken from the stairs looking down onto the cars as well as at ground level.
Feedback was that all had a great time and many would love an opportunity to cruise the track again. Maybe one to revisit in the future, and with word of mouth about the experience might (just might) get an even bigger attendance. Maybe something to advertise at Corvettes Rock The Bay - (Corvettes Round The Bend sounds awesome).
Thanks to all those who attended and made a great day of it. Events Co-ordinator |
