I don't mean to rain on Kevin Jarrett's parade, but I too was always a Ford head, having no luck with the General Motors products over the years. My first car was a 1936 Ford Coupe and after that a FX Holden, which was the magnet… no, not chick magnet, Cop magnet! Following the Holden I had several Ford Customlines. One of which was destroyed by being a party animal, the other one was a culmination of the best of two cars and the third one was my hoon car with a Cuso engine, 4 twin throat carby's, extractors and radically lowered. Several other cars came and went in this time before I got coerced into a Corvette. Why after all this, did I buy a Corvette? Well, that is a very good question……. Once upon a time, there were two single boys, named Phillip and Jim. Phillip decided to go away with the Corvette Club of SA for the Hamilton weekend. I was kindly invited by Phill to go with him. This was the formation of Mr & Mrs Simpson and the introduction to the Corvette Club of SA. After seeing the party animals in full flight with the drinking and skidding around the place, I decided I would fit in very nicely with these ratbags. After returning from the Hamilton weekend, Hans advised me that he had one of his collection of Corvettes for sale that required converting. Fantastic. I now owned a Corvette! Whilst the Corvette was being converted, I took my 1973 Chrysler Imperial, (which was duly named the Aircraft carrier) on club outings. This was not a cheap exercise when trying to keep up with the hoons in the club, making the conversion now urgent! I supervised the conversion process (neatness counts!) when we were able to work on the car, which included weekends and some very late nights. The whole conversion took about 18 months as Hans was converting another Corvette at the same time. We made a few minor changes to the car during the conversion, which included extractors, mild cam shaft, polishing aluminum fixtures and fittings and replacing other worn or damaged items. Then it was off cruising and having fun with other like minded people in the Corvette club. Highlights include the Annual Conventions, including the ones where we didn't have a Corvette, long weekends, which are full of fun and the trip to the States that we have just returned from. P.S. I am not sure if the General likes me any better these days, as I am now finding other problems in the car including a leaking water pump, which was only 2 years old, which is all being fixed under warranty by the very kind Mr Peverelli, who has been trying to get me into Chev products since I was a teenager!!! |
